Abhilash Kizhakke Puliyakote
Abhilash (KP) joined the University of Iowa as an Assistant Research Scientist in March 2023 working with Dr. Sean Fain in the Fain Pulmonary Research Lab. KP defended his doctoral dissertation in 2016 under the guidance of Dr. Eric Hoffman at the University of Iowa on the application of advanced high-resolution micro-computed tomography techniques to study the 3D architecture of acini. He completed his postdoctoral training at The University of California at San Diego, under the mentorship of Dr. Susan Hopkins, Dr. Gordon Kim Prisk, Dr. Peter Wagner, and Dr. John West. He subsequently served as an Instructor in the Department of Medicine in 2021 at The University of Alabama at Birmingham with Dr. Surya Bhatt.
His research interests include the development of quantitative biomarkers of pulmonary functional impairment, and the application of multimodality approaches to assess gas exchange. His current projects include development and implementation of oxygen-enhanced imaging and hyperpolarized xenon gas imaging to assess pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange dynamics. He is also keenly interested in the impact of the immediate environment (indoor air quality, smoking/vaping) on pulmonary perfusion and the efficiency of gas exchange.
- Imaging pulmonary structure-function relationships
- Pulmonary gas exchange and V/Q matching
- Dynamic ventilation and perfusion mapping
- Pulmonary dysfunction with environmental exposures
