The Advanced Pulmonary and Pulmonary Imaging Lab (APPIL) recently attended the 2025 International Workshop on Pulmonary Imaging, held at the University of Pennsylvania. This prestigious multidisciplinary event brought together experts from around the world to discuss innovations in pulmonary imaging, lung physiology, AI applications, and functional imaging technologies. The program featured 18 sessions with over 70 presentations, including keynote talks and contributions from leading researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.

APPIL was well-represented at the workshop, with several of our talented graduate students showcasing their research on cutting-edge imaging techniques and pulmonary disease assessment:

Student Presentations

  • Soheil Hosseini was awarded a Travel Stipend and selected to give an oral presentation on Association of Contrast Enhanced Dual Energy CT-derived Pulmonary Arterial Tree-to-Lung Ratio (ArtLR) with COPD.
  • Saman Khodaei presented on T1 Mapping in the Lungs Using a Variable Flip Angle Approach with UTE-MRI.
  • Olanjumoke Aboderin received the esteemed Acclaimed Alveoli Award for her outstanding poster titled MRI-Based V/Q Matching Using 129-Xe MRI and Dynamic Contrast-enhanced MRI In Long-COVID Patients. This award recognizes the poster that generates the most engaging and impactful discussions among attendees.

Faculty Participation

  • “CT Assessed Sildenafil Effects on Regional Pulmonary V/Q in a Smoking and Non-smoking Population” Presenter: Eric A. Hoffman, Ph.D.
  • “Biovariability of Quantitative Lung Measures During the Menstrual Cycle” Presenter: Jessica Sieren, Ph.D.
  • “Alveolar Structural Dynamics During Mechanical Ventilation: Insights from Multiscale Dynamic Imaging” Presenter: Jacob Herrmann, Ph.D.
  • 4DCT Artifact Detection and Correction for Functional Lung Avoidance Radiation TherapyPresenter: Joseph Reinhardt, Ph.D.
  •  “Efficacy of Multi-Frequency Ventilation in Acute Lung Injury: A Quantitative CT Imaging AssessmentPresenter: David Kaczka, M.D., Ph.D.
  • Pulmonary Image Synthesis: Intensity Transforms and BeyondPresenter: Sarah Gerard, Ph.D.
  • Imaging and Computational Biomarkers in Long COVID Patients: A Three-year Follow-upPresenter: Ching-Long Lin, Ph.D
  • “Thoracic Respiratory Biomarkers in COPD” Presenter: Punam Saha, Ph.D.
  • “Lung Function and Airway Epithelial Barrier Integrity in Primary Cooks Using LPG or Biomass: An Imaging-based Assessment“ Presenter: Alejandro Comellas, M.D.
  • Session: ILD and Fibrosis Moderator: Sean B. Fain, Ph.D.

Beyond the research presentations, the workshop provided an excellent opportunity for APPIL members to engage in discussions, network with peers, and stay at the forefront of advancements in pulmonary imaging. The structured sessions and networking breaks fostered valuable collaborations, reinforcing APPIL’s commitment to pioneering research in lung imaging and disease diagnostics.

We are proud of our team’s contributions and look forward to continuing our work in advancing pulmonary imaging research. Congratulations to all APPIL members for their achievements at this year’s workshop!
